The 142nd state House District race, a rematch between Democratic incumbent Rep. Lucy Dathan and Republican Fred Wilms, who she topped in 2018, had not been called by 11 p.m. Tuesday.
However, Dathan was leading with 6,422 votes so far to Wilms’ 5,789, according to unofficial results.
Dathan acknowledged Tuesday night that votes were still coming in, but she felt “optimistic” about the prospect of representing Norwalk and New Canaan residents for another two years in the state House.
Wilms had finished two terms when Dathan unseated him in 2018.
During a debate in New Canaan, Dathan questioned Wilms’ commitment to the job.
Wilms said Dathan was part of a Democratic majority in Hartford that would vote to regionalize schools and zoning, which Dathan denied.
Dathan served on the following committees: Insurance and Real Estate Committee, Connecticut General Assembly, Vice Chair Appropriations Committee, Connecticut General Assembly Human Services Committee, Connecticut General Assembly.
Wilms is senior vice president at Webster Bank and served, out of 187 legislators, he was the only one who is a banker, he said.
“I knocked on 4,500 doors this season and really enjoyed meeting lots of people hearing their concerns, really feeling very connected to people in the district,” Wilms said on Election Day.
He said people were concerned about taxes, Connecticut’s finances, the police accountability bill, regionalization and zoning.
“I feel cautiously optimistic,” he said.
