Homefront Battles and the Creation of the 29th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers

February 8, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST

Join us for the Legislative Landmarks series at Connecticut’s Old State House featuring geneaologist John Mills. In 1876, Connecticut changed its state constitution, removing the requirement of being white to vote. This change is the culmination of a history of legislation intertwined with the 29th Connecticut Colored Regiment and its members, and Connecticut’s Old State House was the site where many of these legislations were created. In his talk, John Mills will delve into Connecticut’s 1784 Gradual Emancipation Act, the U.S. Militia Act of 1792, Connecticut’s 1818 State Constitution, and much more. Mills will also align each legislative act to the personal experiences of specific African Americans in his research.

About Our Speaker:

John Mills is a trained genealogist, independent scholar, descendant of the enslaved and founder of the Alex Breanne Corporation, a Connecticut-based non-profit. Alex Breanne Corporation focuses on research, interrogation and presentation of lesser-known stories representing the life experiences of the American enslaved, presented from an African American perspective. John focuses on unearthing little- known people and stories, then injecting them into the landscape of the communities where they lived and worked through art, monuments and honorary street names. His goal is to remember the forgotten, as well as to apply critical thinking to our history as a means to find solutions to the many ripple effects today.
