Conversations at Noon on the CT Freedom Trail: Not a Pilgrim Nor a Stranger Here with Amina Merritt, Esq.

July 25, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Join attorney Amina R. Merritt, a direct descendant of Venture Smith, to hear the story of one of Connecticut’s Black founding families. The son of an affluent African family, Venture (named Broteer at birth) was kidnapped and brought to America, where he was enslaved. Many years later, he purchased freedom for himself and his family, became a landowner, and eventually wrote and published his own story. Though often called “Pilgrims” and “Strangers” in this country, the emancipation of the Smith family leaves a legacy of resilience and success. Step back into colonial times to glimpse African American History here in Connecticut. Registration encouraged but not required: https://bit.ly/CFT2023NotaPilgrim
