Honoring Outstanding Achievements in Broadcast and Digital Journalism
HARTFORD, Conn. (May 3, 2018) Connecticut Public Radio is the recipient of two 2018 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association. Connecticut Public Radio was honored in the following categories: Continuing Coverage for The Island Next Door: Connecticut and Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria and Excellence in Video for A Month After Maria, Efforts to Bring Clean Water To Remote Parts of Puerto Rico.
Connecticut Public Radio’s The Island Next Door is an ongoing reporting project that tells the stories of Puerto Rican residents with ties to Connecticut and New England, ongoing efforts to rebuild after Hurricane Maria, and the people who are coming to Connecticut seeking refuge with family and friends. The multimedia initiative includes a robust website with continuing coverage, photos, and videos.
“Our newsroom may be small, but we have big ambitions when it comes to serving people in our community,” said Connecticut Public Radio News Director Jeff Cohen. “So, as Hurricane Maria approached Puerto Rico, we made a decision to cover the island, the storm, and the stories of Puerto Ricans both on the island and on the mainland as a local story. Because, with nearly 300,000 Connecticut residents who claim island roots, that’s exactly what it was and continues to be. I’m proud to work with such committed storytellers, thrilled to have our work recognized, and grateful to all of those people who let us share their stories.”
The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Murrow’s pursuit of excellence in journalism embodies the spirit of the awards that carry his name. Murrow Award recipients demonstrate the excellence that Edward R. Murrow made a standard for the broadcast news profession.
