Social Justice Reading Circle

A five month book club committed to in-depth readings addressing contemporary injustices. Five books in total: all Stowe Prize Nominees, all women authors, all Black authors.
Through weekly one hour sessions, participants will focus intently on short sections of each text.

At the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center, we believe that reading builds empathy and understanding about the complex issues we face in our nation; it is our hope that audiences will be inspired to positive change through these readings, and help to build a sustainable path toward social justice.

The Stowe Center will announce the 2023 Stowe prize winner (one of the five books listed) on Friday, February 24 (2.24.2023). The Stowe Prize recognizes the author of a distinguished book of general adult fiction or nonfiction whose written work illuminates a critical social justice issue in the tradition of Harriet Beecher Stowe鈥檚 Uncle Tom鈥檚 Cabin. The winning book applies informed inquiry, is accessible and engaging to a wide audience, and promotes empathy and understanding. In creating this award, the Stowe Center recognizes the value of diversity to strengthen our communities.
