Watermelon Agua Fresca

The reality of walking the beautiful streets of Mexico City on a summer day is … it gets very hot. Thankfully, the city is full of vendors selling refreshing snacks to cool you off, whether it is a raspado, or flavored ice; a mango cut like a flower and sprinkled with Tajín; or my personal favorite, agua fresca. Agua fresca is a simple juice that highlights just how awesome the fruit in Mexico is (there are also nonfruit varieties, made with flavors like hibiscus). As a kid, I wanted to try every kind. My all-time favorite was the watermelon juice, agua de sandia. The watermelon was so sweet, and the pink color was so pretty!

Watermelon Agua Fresca

Difficulty Level: Easy
Feel free to experiment with other fruits. Try mango or pineapple or peach (though you may need to add some water to the blender, since those aren't as naturally watery as watermelon).

Servings 4 servings

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups fresh seedless watermelon cubes
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional; see the instructions above)
  • Fresh mint leaves, for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Put the watermelon in a blender and blend on high speed until the watermelon turns to liquid, with no solid bits. If the watermelon is not very sweet, add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar while blending.
  • Pour into serving glasses with some ice cubes and garnish with fresh mint leaves.
